Title: Unexpected Surprise
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Daisuke continues to help Claire.
Claire finished her shower and changed into a long, black dress. She kept her hair down and made her way into the kitchen. She looked around the living room in awe. It looked as if her rampage didn’t happen. Claire walked to the vase, feeling the urge to throw it again. She frowned and reached for it when Daisuke grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t. I just fixed it.”
“Like I fucking care. It’s my damn vase and I’ll throw it if I want to.”
“What’s that going to accomplish?”
“It’s going to make me feel better.”
“Oh like just laying here and not doing anything. You haven’t touched any of Axel’s documents, set a replacement for the Suikar seat on the council, you dropped off Seth, and--”
“Leave him out of this!” Claire yanked her wrist from Daisuke’s grasp and rounded on him. “I left him to Bernard and Alene because they can take care of him! He doesn’t need to see his mother like this.” She finished softly, staring at the ground.
“Have you visited him yet? Called him? Text? Email?”
“…”
“Damn it, Claire. What the hell have you been doing all this time?”
“Trying to get my life together!”
“By lying around!”
“I CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT AXEL! CAN’T YOU SEE THAT?” Claire screamed as shadows surrounded her.
Daisuke summoned his own shadows, waiting to see what Claire would do next.
“IT’S TOO HARD! IT HURTS TOO MUCH! HE DID EVERYTHING, NOT ME!”
“SO YOU FORGOT WHO YOU WERE BEFORE AXEL? DID YOU FORGET HOW YOU RAN YOUR CLAN? YOUR GROUP? “
“THAT’S NOT WHO I AM ANYMORE!”
“IT’S ALWAYS A PART OF YOU!”
Claire growled, extending her claws as she ran towards Daisuke. Daisuke dodged her with a sneer. “So, this is the leader of Deadly Wings.”
“FUCK YOU!” Claire screamed. “I’M NOT THAT ANYMORE! I DIDN’T HAVE TO BE! BECAUSE--”
“You didn’t stop being a leader because of it! You’re a leader, Claire! RIGHT NOW PEOPLE NEED YOU!”
“I DON’T CARE!” Claire raised her hand and swiped at Daisuke. She grinned when the clothes shredded under her claws.
Daisuke growled, running forward and swiping at Claire. She dodged it and aimed her claws for Daisuke’s pressure point. He grabbed her wrists and pushed her against the wall.
“Damn it, Claire! I’m trying to help!”
“How? By reminding me how I was a sad little girl before Axel!”
“No! By showing how you were the strong woman to attract Axel! Who else would go up against me, like this?”
“That’s because you’re not that tough, Dai.”
“Only to you,”
Claire struggled against his hold, pushing her shadows towards him. “Let me go!”
“No! Not until we get you back on track!” Daisuke bit his lip when Claire kicked him.
“LET ME GO!” Claire kicked him again.
“I’M NOT GOING TO LET YOU FORGET WHO YOU ARE!”
Claire stopped. She looked up at Daisuke in disbelief. “W-Who I am?”
“Yes,” Daisuke let go of her wrists. “I remember who you are, Claire. I remember the woman who ran a group of Water Demons out of her town. I remember my top assassin who protected others with her techniques. I remember Claire Johnson, the same woman Axel fell in love with.” He cupped her cheek and looked into her eyes. “The same woman I promised Axel, I would protect.”
Tears streamed down Claire’s cheeks as she slumped against the wall. “Why did he take that mission, Dai? W-Why?”
“He took it because the alternative was letting the town be destroyed. Cael wanted to wipe out the town, enslave the people, kill you, and take Seth. Cael’s group was going to betray everyone in Suikar, but Axel discovered the plan and stopped it. He knew what would happen. Axel was no fool. There’s a reason why he left everything to you and Seth.”
Claire’s eyes widened at the revelation. “Axel…h-he…h-he…” She slumped against Daisuke with a choked sob.
Daisuke wrapped his arms around her and held her close.
Claire cried in Daisuke’s arms, until she fell back asleep. There was a long road to go, but with the right help, she could do it.
